Your hipster party: ultimate checklist
Nowadays, it seems as though the world is teeming with hipsters. A hipster, if you’re not in the know, is a person who follows the latest trends in culture. Usually said trends operate outside of mainstream music, art, and fashion. This makes it a great theme for your next party! Here are the things you absolutely must have in order to ensure your party is peak hipster.
The right music is absolutely essential. Avoid any music acts you would normally hear on Top-40 radio. Instead, seek out bands and artists that are tagged in the genres of indie pop or indie rock, and use their songs in your playlist. You should also include at least a few tracks from new hip-hop mixtapes, as well as some classic rap jams. As music in these genres can be pretty diverse, it is important that you carefully consider the order of your songs on your playlist, that way the more relaxed songs can play earlier on and the up-tempo songs can come on later in the party to get things really jumping. To get you started, look up the most popular songs by indie acts like Vampire Weekend, Dirty Projectors, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, and Blood Orange.
Serve hipster-approved beverages. When it comes to stocking the fridge or cooler for a hipster party, the choice is golden: beer. Go with less common, vintage brews like Pabst Blue Ribbon, Genesee Cream Ale, or Hamm’s. Avoid popular brands altogether, unless you are stocking one of their legacy beers. Two good examples of this are Miller High Life or Coors Banquet. While the flavor of these beers might not be anything distinctive, the old-style labeling and relative obscurity fit right in with the hipster aesthetic of appreciating things that are uncommon. Plus, these types of beer are typically inexpensive, which leaves plenty of room in your budget to offer another hipster favorite: artisanal cocktails. Whether it’s a mint julep or an old-fashioned, make sure the liquor that goes into it is “craft” or “small-batch” and is served in a mason jar, with a red-and-white paper straw as a garnish.
Set the tone with the appropriate dress code, decorations, and party favors. Get your guests into the mood right when you invite them. Encourage them to wear flannel and secondhand clothes, especially those with old or outdated logos. Stock up on thick rimmed plastic glasses, fake moustaches and tattoos, and flower crowns for them to put on as they arrive. Your party decorations should again emphasize vintage goods, so get that dusty typewriter out of your attic and use it as a table centerpiece. Remember that the quirkier your hipster party is, the better it will be. Play drinking games, especially ones where the rules can be made up on the fly!
No matter how you choose to host it, make your party fun and take care of your guests. Hipsters love feeling special.
