6 ideas for a unique apartment warming party

Upgrading to a new apartment is always exciting. It’s only natural that you’d want to share that excitement with your closest friends and family. An apartment-warming party allows you to welcome them all into your new space at the same time and show off its amenities. If you want to make your apartment-warming bash one that everyone will remember, try one of these unique ideas.

  1. Make it a potluck.
Does the idea of cooking for a crowd majorly stress you out? Don’t let this keep you from hosting an apartment-warming soiree. Instead, bill it as a potluck and let your family and friends help. Have everyone bring some type of appetizer or finger food, then you can just supply the drinks, plates, and utensils. There’s no need to serve a full meal—this approach allows guests to mingle.
  2. …Or a working party.
If your apartment-warming party guest list includes new neighbors or other acquaintances, you might not want to put them to work. But if it’s just close family and friends who are coming to the party, you can probably getting away with making the theme helping you get settled in. Ask your crew to help you unpack, decorate, or even move as a facet of your apartment-warming party.
  3. Skip the house tour—do a scavenger hunt.
The first thing most people say when they step into a new home is, “Can I have a tour?” Avoid conducting multiple tours by planning a scavenger hunt instead. Hide clues around your apartment and have partygoers search for them as they go for a self-guided tour. This is also a good way to get your guests to mix and mingle if they aren’t all acquainted with each other.
  4. Have a photo contest.
Invite your guests to break out their smartphones and snap photos of your new home and their fellow partygoers. Then ask them to send you their best shots. You can use the images to decorate the walls of your new apartment or create a scrapbook commemorating the early years in this new home.
  5. Bring out the board games.
Nervous about entertaining a big group of friends? Take the pressure off by making it into a game night. Break out your favorite board games, from Monopoly to Connect Four, and let your buddies enjoy an evening of good, old-fashioned fun. Make it a mix of short-format games and longer games so that your guests can choose how much or how little they want to invest in game night.
  6. Let guests in on the decorating ideas.
A less formal way of making your apartment-warming a working party is to invite guests to chime in with their design ideas. If you have no idea what direction you want to go in with your guest room or dining area, let some of your interior design-savvy friends sketch out their ideas for you or simply ask them what they think during the apartment tour (or scavenger hunt).
